Between the Skyscrapers

the cycle

Sometimes you look at all the horrible things,
and how they get away with it all,
and wonder if the cycle will ever end:
the pride and subsequent fall.

History rhymes and repeats,
but lessons learned are forgotten.
Even the most promising of beginnings
can occasionally end up rotten.

Or the situation is just different enough
that it seems like that can't happen here.
We neglect the inner voice of greed and envy,
which above all they revere.

Too often we retreat to our comfort zones,
instead of facing what we fear,
but we're far from perfecting our ways,
and the danger is not yet clear.

What if society never changed?
No new inventions, controversies or cares?
You'd think we'd find equilibrium,
and finally get it right,
but the human soul is temperamental,
and evil makes its plans even in the light.

Long, long, long is this fight.
