Between the Skyscrapers

start here

Well I'd start here,
but I don't exactly know where here is
this is just a place
it seems like you're always helping someone move
and then you have to go to the tavern
the whistle blows on and the people keep singing
the past appears and then disappears,
just as quickly as it came
like the fresh buds of the morn,
every day is so new and fresh
when legal matters are not in view
no fighting goes on,
with me or with you
yes every day is fresh and new
and the sunlight stalks the shadows for hours,
but fails, as many of us do
yet still we go on, to the sky and beyond,
because every day is a chance for the new
no, we're not alone
and everything is done for a reason
don't dread that it's your last chance,
but don't go too fast,
so that your scarf and hat fly off
oh, dark and dreary night!
must we battle you forever?
it was in the film she wanted to know
and in her song
it was everything she reasoned with,
even in times of snow
my last watch stopped working in three hours
not even the city captain could fix it
but still he set out to do
the things he was going to do
oh yes it's true,
like the fresh morning dew,
that every day is something new
the second step is never quite as hard
as the first
all you really need is a little burst
and don't fight against it,
‘cause our journey is ancient,
and more harmonious than we know
but don't stop with putting the thermometer
where it needs to go
and don't worry too much
about your unhappy past
'cause everything happens for just one reason:
that every day is fresh and new
and whatever you do is up to you
stranger yet
than though it may seem
some of us who dream
are a dream ourselves
from one to another, if we love each other,
then death is never found
where the water meets the land
or the river runs dry
where children fall fragile and small
and the birds are chiming so loud
beyond even this and everything else
some of us know it's true,
and some day so will you
some things look better in ink,
I think, while they're saying he's cruel
and I agree that he's a fool
for being rude and unjust,
which are the worst of all faults
but that's okay, some say
I guess it depends on your view
The Lord says so too
or he would if he knew
that we're all here waiting
for the day that comes anew
one before two
we thought about going through;
that didn't work out
we were driven away with fear
eyes look as far as they can,
with no thought as to the year
and for one day we all can see
that everything is great
the taste of an apple was still the same
as it was in the olden days,
and sitting by a tree, just as fun
but don't cut it down with your axe
do I mean the tree or your chance?
whatever it may be
close by, our memories are kept
of those happy and shiny times
of playing in the alley
or maybe in those bushes over there
or even jumping through the air
framing all the pictures
you know what I mean by that
and everyone agrees
so I'll believe you when you say
that we are here today
for one reason, and one reason alone:
this time is our time,
and it's all we've ever known
